Information
Urban sketching transforms everyday scenes into unforgettable works of art. This hands-on experience invites artists of all skill levels to capture the vibrancy and diversity of Miami Beach through plein air (outdoor) drawing, while honing their observational and artistic skills.
As you explore Miami Beach’s rich architectural, artistic, and tropical urban landscapes, our experienced instructor will guide you through the essentials of Urban Sketching. You’ll learn how to simplify complex scenes into engaging compositions by focusing on perspective, proportions, design, focal points, and framing. Adding figures to animate your drawings will also be covered, along with experimentation in both wet and dry media. Drawing tools and materials will be discussed.
The course will also delve into the use of color to enhance your sketches. You’ll explore complementary, analogous, and monochromatic color schemes to determine which best conveys your scene’s mood and story. Techniques for improvisation, exaggeration, and storytelling will help you create dynamic and expressive sketches.
To bring your sketches to life, you’ll practice advanced techniques like spattering and scraping. Individual feedback will be provided during evaluations, and students will have the opportunity to share their work with the group.
The course includes four unique locations to explore—you can participate in all or select the ones that interest you most. Each session begins at the designated on-site meeting point.
