This studio course will provide hands-on instruction to the fundamental understanding and use of color, further development, and refining of drawing techniques and concepts, as well as understanding of observational drawing for the purpose of artistic expression.
During the course, students will be introduced to the work of Paula Rego, a Portuguese-born artist who is known for her pastel drawings based on folk tales. Students will be asked to create a drawing that touches on different qualities of Rego’s work such as concept, composition, techniques, and application of the pastel medium.
▪ Define language associated with materials, color theory, and drawing techniques.
▪ Discuss Ideas and concepts related to Paula Rego’s work.
▪ Further understanding the processes of artistic expression within the drawn form.
▪ Develop a pastel drawing inspired by the works of Paula Rego.
▪ Analyze and evaluate completed work.
About the Instructor
Originally from Pensacola, Fla. Matthew Forehand has based his art career out of the city of Miami. He began his art school studies at Pensacola State College where he received his Associate’s degree in Visual Arts. Matthew continued his education at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting, Drawing, and Printmaking. During his time at SAIC, he enrolled in Ox-Bow School of the Arts, an artist residency in Saugatuck, Mich. Currently, he is teaching visual arts at Miami Arts Charter School. His courses at MAC include Foundational Elements of Art, Material Based Art, and Printmaking.

Students will need to bring to class the following materials
▪ Set of Soft Pastels ( For example THIS set)
▪ Soft vine Charcoal
▪ Hard compressed Charcoal
▪ Toned paper drawing pad 18″ x 24
▪ Drawing pencil 4b or 6b.
▪ Masking Tape
▪ Plastic cup or jar for water
