Information
This is an ideal course for the beginner – intermediate- students who want to learn a step-by-step process to make a still life painting. This course is a continuation of part I, but students who did not take the first part can participate as well. During the three weeks, the students are going to make two still life paintings. Classes will cover color combination, form, texture, composition, and the use of brushes.
In the first class, the instructor is going to show some still life’s images in art history and explain the process that students have to follow using a reproduction of Iris Scott’s image as a visual reference. The students are going to learn how to draw the still life on the canvas following proportions and measurements. The instructor is going to explain briefly about color theory and practice, then the students are going to start mixing and blending colors and learning how to start with the color background.
In the second-class students are going to learn: How to apply the paint according to the shapes and forms. Light and Shadows. Color application and comparisons. How to recreate different materials and textures. Sense of unity and balance of the composition and final details.
In the third class, students are going to start and finish a second painting using a reproduction of Gustave Caillebotte’s image as a visual reference. First, they are going to draw the still life in the canvas and starting blending colors in their palette, then begin applying paint in the background and in the shapes and forms of the different objects in the still life according to the light and shadows, then they are going to focus in the details, painting with more precision until they complete the painting
Students are going to have constant evaluation and guidance during the class. The instructor will answer questions and critique. Every time the instructor makes a demonstration, showing how to paint an area of the painting, the students will do the practice following it, and once that part is finished, they will have an evaluation. This will be the process until the painting is completed, then a final critique will take place to review all the things they learned, what they did correctly and what things need modification before the end of the course.
