Explore the art of lithography in this focused 4-week workshop on pronto-plate techniques. Building on the tradition of lithography, developed in the late 18th century, this course introduces a modern approach that eliminates the need for traditional stones or acid. Designed for beginners and experienced printmakers, it covers the entire process—from designing your image to printing on professional presses. Gain the skills to create bold, striking prints using this versatile and accessible technique.
Course Schedule
Class 1: Introduction to Lithography and Plate Preparation
– Overview of the lithographic process and pronto-plate materials.
– Introduction to tools, materials, and safe handling practices.
– Preparing pronto-plates for drawing: surface cleaning and guidelines.
– Demonstration of drawing directly on the plate using grease-based materials.
– Q&A and review of student concepts for their first prints.
Class 2: Image Creation and Plate Development
– Understanding the relationship between grease, water, and ink in lithography.
– Exploring drawing techniques: pencils, crayons, tusche, and toner-based images.
– Demonstration of chemical processing to set images on pronto-plates.
– Students develop and set their plates for printing.
– Group critique and troubleshooting techniques.
Class 3: Printing and Inking Techniques
– Preparing the press for pronto-plate lithography.
– Demonstration of proper inking and dampening techniques.
– Printing on various paper types to explore texture and tonal quality.
– Hands-on printing: guiding students through multiple prints of their images.
– Discussing common challenges and solutions.
Class 4: Final Printing Session and Critique
– Refining printing techniques to achieve desired results.
– Pulling a final edition of prints.
– Group critique: sharing and discussing finished works.
– Overview of care and storage of pronto-plates for future use.
– Course conclusion and reflection on the learning experience.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Originally from Pensacola, Florida, Matthew Forehand has based his art career out of the city of Miami. He began his art school studies at Pensacola State College where he received his Associate’s degree in Visual Arts. Matthew continued his education at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting, Drawing, and Printmaking. During his time at SAIC, he enrolled in Ox-Bow School of the Arts, an artist residency in Saugatuck, Michigan. He currently teaches visual arts at Miami Arts Charter School (MAC). His courses at MAC include Foundational Elements of Art, Material Based Art, and Printmaking. He’s the current Printmaking resident at Oolite Arts.
