Information
A color can reflect a landscape, a plant, a world history, or even a way of inhabiting a city. In this workshop, we will learn how to extract natural dyes from our surroundings to tell stories about color that go beyond an aesthetic component and become an element that records territory, time, and culture.
Participants will learn how to obtain dyes from plants, food waste, and spices to color cellulose fibers like cotton and linen. We will go through every stage of how to successfully clean and fix textiles to capture vibrant and long-lasting color palettes.
Natural dyes and the harmony of their combination offer nuances and shades impossible to achieve with artificial dyes. Unlike conventional dyes, the natural dyeing process has a minimal impact on the environment and on the health of the dyer and the end user.
This workshop invites you to rediscover traditional knowledge, challenge mainstream ideas about color, and become more mindful of the resources our landscapes provide. All skill levels are welcome, and supplies are included.
By the end of this workshop, participants will learn:
- How to collect and extract local, accessible dyestuff (native/non-native plants, pantry ingredients) to create unique colors for their art projects.
- Techniques for mordanting, dyeing, and achieving consistent, long-lasting colors for plant fibers.
- Insider tips on experimenting with local plants to create your own color palette.
- A deeper connection to your materials and the natural world.
Participants will take home a logbook with sample cards of all the colors tested and recipes for how to replicate them.
Classes must meet a minimum enrollment number to run; please don’t wait until the last minute to register!

About the instructor
Veronica Buitron is a Miami-based designer and educator specialising in natural dyes and sustainable textiles. She discovered her passion for natural dyes while pursuing her BFA at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and deepened her knowledge through mentorship from Peruvian dyers. Since 2016, Veronica has taught natural dyeing workshops to artisans in Ecuador and textile enthusiasts in Miami. In March 2020, she released her first book, which focuses on native dye plants from her home country of Ecuador. IG: @veronicabuitron
