Gabriel Jean-Paul Soomar is a transdisciplinary designer, creative director, and educator whose practice synthesises emergent media, storytelling, and culture to elicit and shape collective imagination. Through critical fabulation and digital technology his practice traverses slippages between pasts, presents, and futures within the Black Atlantic. Noteworthy contributions include A Spectrum of Blackness presented at the Museum of Modern Art’s Reconstructions: Architecture and Blackness in America, Griot at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale, The Laboratory of the Future, curated by Lesley Lokko, and HOLD on the Radcliffe Yard at Harvard University. Perhaps best known for his immersive design experiments that unearth marginalised narratives and temporalities, Soomar continually seeks to expand the cultural and social impact of architecture. He completed a Master of Design Studies and a Master of Architecture II at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. He is the creative director of Studio Barnes and a Lecturer at the University of Miami.
