Skills: The Path to Public Art
with Carola Bravo
This two-hour introductory workshop provides artists with a practical roadmap to the basics of applying to public art calls. Drawing from real-world public art practice, including public commissions and the integration of art into architecture, the session explains how calls work: how to read them, how to respond strategically, and how to present work that resonates with selection committees.
Participants will gain clarity on key application components such as statements of interest, resumes, portfolios, budgets, and schedules, as well as common requirements around community engagement, durability, maintenance, fabrication, and site feasibility. Through case examples and sample application materials, we will break down what makes a proposal compelling, credible, and buildable in the
public realm.
About the Speaker:
Carola Bravo is a Venezuelan-American artist and architect whose thirty-five-year art practice bridges public art, architecture, and contemporary visual culture. Working through spatial interventions, immersive installations, and video, her work explores memory, displacement, and the politics of place.
Bravo has completed more than 25 built public art projects across Florida and Latin America and has been shortlisted for over eight additional commissions in Florida alone. Beyond her artistic production, since 2019 she has served as public art consultant to a Miami-based development firm, producing 12 civic art proposals and supporting the integration of art into architectural and urban projects. Her commitment to field development extends to academic work, mentoring artists, curating public art programs, organizing talks, and advancing discourse around monuments, public space, and cultural equity.
Bravo holds a Master’s in Art History and a Ph.D. in Architecture, is the founder of Hartvest Project, teaches at Florida International University, and conducts ongoing research on the contemporary role of public art and memorial practices. Her work has received major recognitions, including The Ellies Creators Award and The Bass Museum’s New Monuments Award.
