Information
Explore the fascinating world of color perception in this hands-on painting workshop led by artist Raul Perdomo at Oolite Arts. Inspired by the work of artist and educator Josef Albers, this two-day workshop invites intermediate to advanced artists, educators, and design students to discover how color functions as a dynamic, relative medium where context is everything.
Moving beyond traditional color mixing, participants will explore color interaction—how a single color can appear dramatically different depending on its surroundings, and how distinct colors can appear identical through strategic placement. Using Albers’ iconic, “Homage to the Square” nested formats, you will master key color principles including:
- Simultaneous Contrast: How adjacent colors alter perceived hue, value, and saturation.
- Color Subtraction: Controlling background grounds to manipulate focal points.
- Optical Illusion & Translucency: Creating the illusion of spatial depth and transparency using flat, opaque paint.
Emphasizing active observation, experimentation, and critical seeing, this workshop will sharpen your visual literacy and transform your approach to color in your artistic practice.
Class Breakdown:
Day 1: Preparing color grounds, evaluating value relationships, and rendering translucent effects.
Day 2: Grounding color, analyzing hue variations, and understanding chroma behavior.
Supplies will be provided.
Refund & Cancellation Policy: Attendees may request a refund up to 48 hours before the course starts. Classes must meet a minimum enrollment number to run.
