Amidst Twin Suns: Weekend Activations

For the upcoming weeks, Alberto Checa will be activating in the gallery space with iterations of music, sound and playlists curated by fellow artists and musicians as part of his solo show, Amidst Twin Suns. Much like a community radio station, each session will be a dedicated dialogue between Checa and another artist, activating Checa’s sculptures as a location for amplification, exchange, and connection. Oolite Arts presents Amidst Twin Suns, the first solo exhibition of Miami-based artist Alberto Checa. Production is a key idiom in Checa’s work, appearing literally among work titles and as gestured through his performances – posed as hypothesis, rather than conclusion, divorcing its concept from capitalist expectations. In such ways, Checa’s productions reject the status of idol, often re-used to aid future performances or recycled. Instead, process takes the place of product, ultimately dissolving the function of labor systems as we know it and reimagining these methods beyond their mechanical wrath. A new kind of choreography emerges in Checa’s abstract systems of production, and a new way of understanding labor is ushered in. Amidst Checa’s performances are propositions of new possibilities of being, building and protecting.
