Dave Muller, visual artist
Arthur Baker, music producer
Art Sounds … Contemporary Art in Stereo
Art Sounds is a brand new program series that will feature a celebrated visual artist in conversation with a musician to whom the artist admires.
From the early days of culture, both music and visual arts are the perfect couple. Each creative medium inspires one another and Art Sounds will explore this relationship in depth.
For the first Art Sounds, nationally renowned artist Dave Muller will explore the music-visual relationship in conversation with music producer Arthur Baker, pioneer of the cut-‘n’-paste sampling style and producer of the legendary track “Planet Rock” with Afrika Bambaataa.
6:30 pm: Doors open
7:00 – 8:00 pm: Conversation between the artists
8:00 – 10:00 pm: After party with back-to-back DJ sets by Dave Muller and Arthur Baker
The evening will include complimentary drinks, and food by Proper Sausages!
About the Artists
Dave Muller
As DJ, curator, and artist, Muller examines with wit and irony the formation of an individual’s identity through the amassing of cultural references. His work has poked fun at the identity-definition and categorization of genres by national magazines such as the New York Times.
In 2008, Muller installed a mural of a massive timeline chronicling the evolution of rock n’ roll since 1955 entitled As Below, So Above in the lobby of the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.
Solo exhibitions of Muller’s work have been held at Blum & Poe Gallery (1998, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2009), St. Louis Art Museum (2001), Bard Center for Curatorial Studies in Annandale-on-Hudson (2002), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2004), and Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston (2008).
Arthur Baker
Recognized on Resident Advisor as, “one of the few producers who can actually lay claim to having changed dance music history.” A prolific and widely collaborative artist, Arthur Baker has created music with Rick Rubin, Mick Jagger, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Kraftwerk, and more.
In addition to having produced within his own label, Baker has worked with record labels Tommy Boy Music, Warner Bros. Records, PolyGram, Criminal Records.
