Information
This virtual course is ideal for beginner and intermediate students who want to improve their painting skills and learn a step-by-step process to make a three-quarter view portrait painting. No previous painting experience is required.
The instructor will explain the process of making a three-quarter view portrait, demonstrating each step and the class will follow the instructions. A painting by artist John Larriva will be used as a visual reference.
The second work will be an image of your choice, either a painting or a photo following the same method.
The first steps consist in drawing a portrait on canvas and creating a sketch first, following a step-by-step process, applying the concepts of symmetry, proportions, comparisons, and measurements. Once the drawing is complete, you will set up a palette, mix and blend colors, and start painting the background.
You will learn how to apply the paint according to the shapes and forms of the face, modulating tones and colors, light and shadows, color application, and comparisons. You’ll learn how to represent the different features of the face, sense of unity and balance of the composition, and final details.
The class will complete two paintings through constant evaluation and guidance. A final critique will take place before the end of the course.
