Interstate is a project by Madrid-based artists Esther Mañas and Arash Moori. Mañas was a visiting artist at ArtCenter in April-May 2014 through the additional support of Acción Cultural Española. Mañas’ interest in urban space led her to explore Miami’s highways, their history and how they have and continue to transform neighborhoods by creating hierarchies—symbolically and structurally.
Their collaborative work can be placed within the field of experiential installation where they often use sound as a sculptural medium to transform and interact with the perceptions of the visual and architectural. Both artists were invited to present Interstate, a photographic dérive published in the form of a book documenting Mañas’ exploration. Moori, a multidisciplinary artist who works with sound, completed a residency at the Audiotheque operated by Subtropics.org. He developed the sound component to their site-specific installation at the Richard Shack Gallery, Listening Gallery and the Lincoln-Meridian windows of ArtCenter’s iconic 800-810 building.
