Information
This is an ideal class for beginner-intermediate students who want to learn a step-by-step process of how to make an impressionist portrait painting.
Rejecting established styles, the Impressionists began experimenting in the early 1860s with a brighter palette of pure unblended colors, synthetic paints, sketchy brushwork, and subject matter drawn from their direct observations of nature and of everyday life.
This course is divided into four classes once a week and will cover color combination, form, texture, composition, and the use of brushes and other painting tools.
The instructor will explain the process of making a female portrait that students will follow using a reproduction of Kees Van Dongen’s image and then one of Henry Matisse for a visual reference.
The students will learn how to draw a portrait on canvas by creating a sketch first, following a step-by-step process, and applying the concepts of symmetry, proportions, comparisons, and measurements. Once the drawing is complete, they will set up a palette, mix and blend colors, and start painting the background.
Students will learn how to apply the paint according to the shapes and forms of the face, modulating tones and colors, light and shadows, color application, and comparisons. They’ll also learn how to represent the different features of the face, sense of unity and balance of the composition, and final details.
Students will complete two paintings through constant evaluation and guidance during the class. A final critique will take place before the end of the course.
